Learn how to install, track, and use a 1" x 42" felt polishing belt on your sander, plus when to switch from sanding to polishing and how to avoid common mistakes.

Quick answer

Install the felt belt with the arrow matching your sander's rotation, tension it until it runs flat without slipping, then track it by adjusting the tracking knob in small increments while the belt runs slowly. Use light pressure and let the compound do the cutting.

Why felt behaves differently from sandpaper

A felt belt has no abrasive grit of its own. It carries polishing compound and conforms to the workpiece, so it removes material far more slowly than a sanding belt. That makes it a finishing tool, not a shaping tool: if you still see scratch marks from the previous grit, drop back to sanding before you polish.

Felt also stretches and compresses more than cloth-backed abrasives. Expect to re-tension a new belt after a few minutes of running, and expect tracking to drift if you overtighten it.

When to switch from sanding to polishing

Switch when the scratch pattern from your last sanding grit is uniform and you want a reflective surface rather than a shaped edge. On knife blades, that usually means finishing the bevel on a fine sanding belt first, then moving to felt with compound.

If the felt belt feels like it is doing nothing, the problem is usually preparation, not pressure. More compound or more force will not remove deep scratches that a sanding belt should have taken out.

Tracking and tension pitfalls

Most tracking problems come from three things: a belt installed inside out, uneven tension, or a tracking adjustment made too aggressively. Make adjustments in tiny increments and let the belt settle before turning the knob again.

Never track a belt at full speed with your hands near the idler wheel. Run the sander slowly, watch the belt edge, and stop the machine before making any large correction.

Step-by-step setup and use

  1. Inspect the belt and sander: Check the felt for folds or hard spots and confirm the belt dimensions match your sander's platen. Remove any loose grit or metal dust from the platen and wheels before installing. A contaminated platen will imprint marks into the felt and cause tracking drift.
  2. Install the belt in the correct direction: Slide the belt over both wheels so the inside surface contacts the wheels and the felt face points outward. If the belt has a directional arrow, match it to the sander's rotation. Installing a felt belt inside out gives no polishing action and can damage the felt surface.
  3. Tension the belt: Apply tension until the belt feels firm but still deflects slightly under finger pressure. Run the sander at low speed for 30 seconds, then re-check tension and tighten if needed. New felt belts stretch; a second tension check after the first run prevents slipping mid-polish.
  4. Track the belt at low speed: With the sander running slowly, turn the tracking adjustment in small increments and watch the belt edge. Stop and restart after each adjustment until the belt runs centered on the platen. If tracking will not stabilize, release tension and re-seat the belt before adjusting again.
  5. Apply compound sparingly: Load the felt with a small amount of polishing compound and spin the belt briefly to distribute it. Add more only when the surface stops responding. Too much compound glazes the felt and slows cutting; too little creates heat and uneven polish.
  6. Polish with light pressure: Hold the workpiece lightly against the belt and move it steadily across the felt. Let the compound and belt speed do the work rather than pressing hard. Heavy pressure overheats the felt and can round over edges you want to keep crisp.
  7. Clean and store the belt: After use, run the belt briefly to shed loose compound, then remove it and store it flat or loosely coiled away from moisture and sharp objects. Storing a felt belt under tension or in a tight fold creates permanent tracking problems.
